Date of lesson: 24th of August 2011

Objectives:

• Todays specific mathematical objectives were continue expanding students knowledge of Multiplication Facts through games and activities
Students that achieved these objectives:
• Todays games were finally on the right wave length for the students. The spider game was a fun first activity for the lesson, even though it was easy for all the students to find the answers using the dice, because they were so excited and eager to finish, as it was a race that they all often made mistakes, and added the numbers, not multiplied. This task was easy and fun. The farmyard activity however was interesting, Nathan is our brightest student and he only got 1 out of 4 correct. When we asked him how he was finding the answers he told us he was adding on, not multiplying. Sophie was using her multiplication knowledge, and after the 3rd puzzel I helped Sam work out a better strategy. She then proceeded to easily find the answer to the last question. This game was appropriate because it showed students there is more than one way to find the same answer, and it was interesting to see how different students used different methods.
• Mathematical language revised was Multiplication, Multiples, Division and Times, Repeated Addition
Materials:
• Whiteboard Markers
• Farmyard cut outs – fences and animals
• Activity Sheets
• Dice
• Pencils/Books

Next Lesson:
• Next lesson we are still going to focus on Multiplication. We can split Nathan and Sophie into half and Sage and Sam- we can work in groups according to ability level, and maybe set some harder tasks/extensions for Nathan and Sophie. However today the way we worked, seemed to be ok for different ability students yet we all participated in the same game.

Objectives:

• Todays specific mathematical objectives were continue expanding students knowledge of Multiplication Facts by using Games and Arrays
Students that achieved these objectives:
• Nathan found most tasks we set quite easy, and sometimes came across as bored. He is a high achiever, as is Sophie, she found these tasks quite easy, but was happy to discuss her answers and working out, where as Nathan would become easily distracted once finished his set task. Sage is the student in the middle of Nathan and Sam, our tasks seem to be just right for her level wise. Sam is still having trouble with her multiplication facts and often used the wall to search for answers.
• Mathematical language revised was Multiplication, Multiples, Division and Times.
Materials:
• Multiplication Bingo
• Counter Tiles
• Uno Cards
• Deck of Cards
• Unifixes
• Pencils/Books

Appropriateness:
• The games that were set were very appropriate. We should have expanded on the Restaurant task more. Nathan had the answer worked out very quickly. If we had extension questions such as “If we pushed 4 tables together, how many customers could our restaurant fit?”, we could have bought some more time for the students who still needed to work out the first answer, rather than him just sitting there.
Next Lesson:
• Next lesson we are still going to focus on Multiplication, however try and up the anti work wise for the faster 2. We can split Nathan and Sophie into half and Sage and Sam- we can work in groups according to ability level, and maybe set some harder tasks/extensions for Nathan and Sophie.

Objectives:

• Todays specific mathematical objectives were to assess the level of VEL’s that the students were at. This was done by using a range of multiplication fact games to evaluate the students.
Students that achieved these objectives:
• Out of the 4 students in the group, 3 of them (Sage, Nathan and Sophie) are at around a 2.75 level according to the VEL’s Progression points, Sam however struggled with most of her multiplication facts (she even admitted this as one of her weaknesses, see image 1). She would still be at level 2.25.
• Mathematical language revised was Multiplication, Multiples, Division and Times.
Materials (See image 2):
• Counters
• Egg Carton
• Multiplication Bingo Cards
• Books and Pencils
• Toilet Paper

Appropriateness:
• I think the activities set were very appropriate because Chloe and I were unsure of where to set the bar ability wise.
Next Lesson:
• Next week we are going to play similar games, however focus on fact families such as 3,4 and 7, as today our games were based around 2, 5 and 10 fact families, and they seemed to be a bit too easy. They will be appropriate because the students stated that they would like to improve on these fact families- and practise makes perfect.
